headstand in the Cayley plot at St.James the Less cemetery, 2012

David's mother Margaret was good at cartwheeels and headstands. She died in her home town of Mansfield in UK in 1996. In 1997 her ashes were brought over and first located near the family cottage in Muskoka. But then in 2012, they were reburied in the Cayley family plot in Toronto. Margaret's marker is beside that of Jutta's mother, Heidi Bechmann, who was buried in the Cayley plot when she died in February 2011.

When both markers had been installed, David did a headstand in their honour.

David's CBC book launch took place just two weeks after Kate's book launch for her novel. David's was at Flying Books, whose owner, Martha Sharpe, was working at Anansi when she was tasked with helping David with his Prisons book. The two of them got on very well. So it was wonderful for David to have his CBC book launch party at Martha's store many years later. Friends reconnected there -- including Mary Sharpe (no relation to Martha!), the midwife who helped Luke and Daniel get born. The photo at the right shows the two of them towering over Mary. They were really glad to see each other.

Funerals are of course another place where friends can reconnect.
